Long Time Coming and Long Time Gone

"nothing is good enough
for those who know.
providing someone takes the time
to pass the world."

Together Mimi and Joan collected and got to publication an anthology of his later short stories and poems. Long Time Coming and a Long Time Gone contains some very interesting writing.

"The paperback was done by Dell Publishing Co., and came out a year later in May, 1970 at ninety-five cents and never having seen anything higher than a first edition, I have to assume it went through only one printing, and on cheap paper which turned yellow on the way home from the bookstore.
It has never been reissued.
The cover is an anonymous watercolor and ink, again done from the Gahr photo, this time flipped backwards, with the artist using the same collage-in-the-hair motif as Von Schmidt." Source

Long Time Coming And A Long Time Gone goes beyond that first novel in range and savage candor. It is a multi-track recording in prose and poetry of highs and lows, bum trips and mind-blasts, and of an odyssey that made the revolutionary scene in Cuba n Ireland, the expatriate scene in London and Paris, the big time folk scene in the U.S., and the human scene every inch of the way.

It's all here. All very choice. And all very alive. Now and forever.

Hard cover version

Long time coming and a long time gone, Random House, 1969; cover design and illustration by Eric von Schmidt

The cover illustration was by Eric Von Schmidt from the David Gahr photo (which graced the back cover); Eric said he was having a lot of trouble getting the likeness until he added the slight grin.

The back cover photo at right was taken backstage at the Newport Folk Festival 23 July, 1965 - probably in the mid-to-late afternoon. The Fariñas didn't play that day, so wandered the grounds, getting their pictures taken every step of the way. Dick was wearing this shirt at their last concert appearance, at the San Francisco Folk Festival in April of 1966.
